EA released the Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour source code, prompting a security analysis that reveals significant vulnerabilities in the 2003 game's network protocol 0:00.
Key Takeaways:
• The game uses UDP port 8086 for LAN communication, with security weak by modern standards due to its 2003 development era 1:55
• The game's "encryption" relies solely on XOR operations, which provides no real security and leaves portions of data unencrypted 2:27
• Packet validation uses a CRC check and a magic number "food" to verify packet authenticity 7:58
• Chat messages and lobby information are broadcast in plaintext across the network, readable by anyone on the LAN 12:50
• The game's authentication system relies only on IP addresses with UDP, making it vulnerable to IP spoofing attacks 16:52
The security researcher rated the game's security a 4/10, noting some safe coding practices but highlighting fundamental vulnerabilities in the network protocol design 16:52.
