Source: YouTube · National Geographic · published Jan 10, 2026 · 44:03
Summary: Investigative journalist Mariana van Zeller exposes how a sophisticated Nigerian mafia network transforms vulnerable elderly people into unwitting drug mules. 70-year-old Rodney Baldus is serving an 18-year prison sentence in Mozambique for a crime he claims he didn't know he was committing.
Key Takeaways:
• Rodney was lured to Mozambique by a fake $10.5 million inheritance scam, where he was handed a suitcase containing heroin and arrested at the airport.
• Investigations revealed two other foreign men were imprisoned under identical circumstances, confirming a coordinated pattern of using "blind mules."
• The operation was traced to Black Axe, a Nigerian syndicate larger than the Sinaloa Cartel, which uses these mules to traffic heroin along the "Southern Route" to Europe.
• Posing as a victim named Zoey, Mariana arranged a meeting with a scammer and confronted him with evidence before he fled the scene.
Closing: The investigation concludes with an emotional reunion between Rodney and his daughter Nicole, highlighting that this tragedy is fundamentally a human trafficking story.
