Source: YouTube · Computerphile · published Jan 29, 2021 · 15:33
The video demonstrates using the traceroute command to recreate classic hacker movie scenes that visualize internet data paths across the globe 0:00.
Key Takeaways:
• Hacker movies often featured dramatic visualizations of data traveling across world maps, inspiring this technical demonstration 0:06
• The presenter combined traceroute with Python to create a visualization showing the actual path data takes from the UK to New Zealand 0:28
• The traceroute results revealed data hopping from the UK to America, across the west coast, and through a massive transoceanic cable to reach New Zealand 0:46
• Traceroute works through what the presenter describes as a "beautiful hack" to map network routes between destinations 1:03
This demonstration bridges the gap between Hollywood's dramatic portrayal of hacking and the reality of how network data travels across the world.
