Why Privacy Will Be the Biggest Moat in Crypto
Source: YouTube · a16z crypto · published Jan 30, 2026 · 36:07
Ali Yaya argues privacy will become crypto's most important moat as block space becomes commoditized, creating network effects that will result in a handful of winning privacy chains.
Key Takeaways:
• Unlike social media, users care deeply about financial privacy, making it essential for mainstream crypto adoption
• Moving secrets between chains is technically difficult due to different anonymity sets, creating natural lock-in
• Privacy creates self-reinforcing feedback loops, likely leading to winner-take-most dynamics
• Key privacy technologies include zero-knowledge proofs, fully homomorphic encryption, multi-party computation, and trusted execution environments
This consolidation toward privacy chains doesn't conflict with decentralization, as networks remain permissionless and credibly neutral despite having fewer dominant players.

People claim that users don't ultimately care about privacy. And I think that may be true when it comes to Instagram and Facebook and other social media, but I don't believe it is true when it comes to finance. In order for crypto to actually become mainstream, it's going to have to have privacy. And so then that creates a self-reinforcing feedback loop. It creates a network effect. That means that there will be a handful of winning privacy chains. Everything else will be small relative to those winners. [music] >> Welcome to the A6Z Crypto podcast.
