From Zero to Zero Day (and beyond) - Life of a Hacker: Jonathan Jacobi
Source: YouTube · LiveOverflow · published Apr 8, 2025 · 1:26:24
Jonathan Jacobi’s journey from a curious teenager to a cybersecurity leader illustrates that career success relies on a blend of relentless technical practice, strategic networking, and the courage to seize random opportunities. His evolution from a pure vulnerability researcher to a CTO demonstrates how broadening one’s skill set beyond code is essential for high-impact leadership.
Key Takeaways:
• Jacobi’s interest in computers began with gaming and private servers at age 9, which sparked a curiosity about how systems work, leading him to pursue a computer science degree while still in middle school 2:24.
• He entered Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions around age 15, initially failing but persisting because he was driven by the thrill of solving complex challenges and the potential to control computer systems 14:05.
• Networking was crucial to his early career; he built his founding team for Perfect Blue by connecting with others on IRC after CTFs, highlighting the importance of community and shared passion 20:52.
• Jacobi actively created opportunities by reaching out to influential figures, such as contacting Microsoft’s Assaf Rappaport to attend a conference and later securing an internship, proving that boldness can open doors 37:35.
• His military service as a cybersecurity commander shifted his perspective from pure technical mastery to valuing human interaction, team building, and leadership responsibilities 58:23.
• He now serves as CTO at Dash IO, focusing on product strategy and working with a trusted team, having learned that using his "whole deck of cards" (tech, people, business) is more effective than relying on a single skill 16:31.
Jacobi’s story emphasizes that while technical skills are foundational, the ability to connect with others and adapt to new roles is what drives long-term career growth. He encourages aspiring professionals to stay curious, work hard, and never be afraid to ask for opportunities.

Today I'm sitting here with Jonathan Jacobi.
He is only 24 years old, but already has a very incredible career.
He is a very successful CTF player. He's a founding member of Perfect Blue and also
played with Preston, and he has worked as a as a vulnerability researcher with Checkpoint.
And he was even one of the youngest, maybe even the youngest Microsoft employee and then even
later did vulnerability research in the military. And now he joined the cybersecurity
startup Dash IO as part of the CTO team. So hello, Jonathan. Welcome.
Yeah, it's my pleasure to be here. So I first wanted to talk about
how we met because we met first, I believe at CCC because you gave a talk.
You're going to tell us about the last 12 months and what you have done.
So your talk is called From zero to Zero day…
