Description

BLUF: Data centers are emerging as prime military targets—Russia is striking Ukrainian data centers and Iran has knocked out AWS facilities in the Middle East—and US cloud infrastructure is far more brittle than most assume 0:00

Key Takeaways:
• Data centers can be damaged so severely that data is unrecoverable; expect them as future targets 0:36
• Like an ancient Indian empire that fell when its canals were destroyed, modern infrastructure's real vulnerability is its lifelines: cooling, power, and fiber 1:53
• Disaster recovery plans don't cover coordinated attacks—Walmart rifles could plink cooling towers or grid insulators, shutting down 10-30 data centers at once 5:02
• Ukraine, Russia, and Iran are the "Henry Fords of drone warfare": $1,000-$2,000 flat-pack one-way drones with 1,000-1,500 mile range could strike nearly anywhere in the US 12:19
• A cloud-native generation lacks infrastructure fundamentals, which adversaries could exploit 14:04
• Hurricane Helene showed the weakest-link problem: Asheville, 100,000+, was left with one 100-gig fiber connection 18:09
• Creeping centralization (e.g., single exchange points) has reintroduced the internet's single points of failure 21:12

Are your systems truly as resilient as you believe—and could US defenses stop a drone swarm? We won't realize the danger until it hits.

Coming from CNBC, Russia targets data centers in Kiev as NATO condemns Moscow's irresponsible nuclear rhetoric. So, I kind of think that this is an interesting thing to be considering as system administrators and technology professionals in the 2020s. Basically, the question of what happens when people decide to start plinking your data centers. This is something that you need to be concerned about. Uh we've heard about this in the Middle East recently with the war going on with Iran that Iran has decided to start plinking AWS data centers. And apparently, literally these data centers are essentially offline, if not permanently, basically damn near permanently, that the data centers were damaged to such a degree that the data in the data centers are irreoverable. And so one of the things t…
